Bombay (Mumbai)
The Portuguese dubbed this city Bom Bahia, "beautiful bay." There is much to see, including the Prince of Wales Museum and Chor Bazaar, the Bombay flea market. Take a trip to the exquisite Taj Mahal in Agra. This amazing memorial was built by Shah Jahan for his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Activities
- Rajabai Clock Tower - Modeled on Giotto's campanile in Florence, the sculpted figures decorating the exterior walls were designed to represent the castes of India. Originally, the chimes even played Rule Britannia. The clock tower stands in front of the Victoria Museum.
- The Victoria Gardens and Museum - This two-story Palladian building is an unusual sight in a city dominated by Victorian-Gothic architecture. The museum, completed in 1872, houses an interesting display about the history of Mumbai. Next door are the Victoria Gardens.
